Motherhood--Messy, but PERFECT!/I Have No Idea What to Do!

I Have No Idea What to Do!

If you're a mom, you have probably nearly perfected the art of answering questions.

"Where is my green sweater?"

"What is the square root of 71?"

"Why does my teacher give us so much homework?"

"How do I wash this load of laundry?"

"How many days until my birthday party?"

The list goes on and on and on.

Some answers are easy. "In the hamper."

But oftentimes, there are bigger problems to solve than why your child's teacher likes to assign homework.

What do you do when you seriously don't know what to do?

Don't panic. Here are a few tips:

1-Keep in mind, it's OK to say, "I don't know." While you might feel like an Encyclopedia Britannica, you really aren't expected to know everything about everything. Admitting you don't know gives your children permission to do the same without shame.

2-Ask yourself this: "If I did know what to do, what would that be? What would I do?" Believe it or not, asking yourself this question gives your brain the assignment of figuring it out. It will begin to search for viable answers and solutions. Pick one and try it.

3-Give yourself time. Some problems that may arise in your family can't be solved in an instant. They require deep meditation, research, prayer, and lists of possible answers. They involve consistent effort and a calm mind. It's OK to offer yourself the time needed to figure out what you think is the best course of action.

4-Try something. It's easy to allow fear to keep you from making a decision or taking action. But here's the thing--nobody else knows what to do either. Nobody else knows your children and family like you do. Nobody else could solve the problem any better than you can. So, just try a solution. If it doesn't work, no problem. Try something else. Doing nothing is a decision in and of itself and the results aren't usually favorable, so be intentional. Remember it's OK to not get it right the first time.

So the next time you are tempted to think, "I have no idea what to do," remember to question that statement. What if you do know what to do? What would that look like? Then move ahead with confidence.

Don't give up if the answer isn't obvious. Keep trying. Keep trusting yourself.

You got this!
